236 returns from Annual Camp 2011

Seven cadets from 236 Kensington detachment joined the rest of North West London ACF for the sector's annual camp in Norfolk. This year's camp was held from Saturday 30 July to Friday 12 August at Wretham camp.

All our cadets undertook training to advance them closer earning their first star pass. Their was a range of activities including shooting, kayaking, paintball, an obstacle course and more. The second week included four days of infantry training with the cadets living in the field.

Three of our cadets passed one star in its entirety - the others are now much closer. We also received three awards: most improved 1 star went to Cadet Eddy and best 1 star and best shot went to Cadet Teasdale.

At the end of the exercise Cadet Teasdale was promoted to Lance Corporal, making him the detachment's first cadet NCO.

The exercise was a success - the cadets greatly enjoyed themselves and performed admirably.

Unit receives Life Guards cap badge

On Monday 27 July eight recruits from 236 Kensington ACF detachment passed out as cadets. This marked the completion of their basic phase of training. As the first cadets to pass out at a new unit, this also marked the official beginning of our affiliation with our parent regiment, the Life Guards.

The cadets received their berets for the first time in a ceremony presided over by Capt Brian Rogers from the Household Cavalry Mounted Regiment in Knightsbridge. The event was attended by the Royal Borough's mayor, Councillor Julie Mills and the Deputy Lieutenant, Richard Walker-Arnott, as well as the families of the cadets.

236 supports Uniform to Work Day

The following was written by Cadet Percy Teasdale, 15, who participated in Uniform to Work Day.

This year Wednesday 22 June was 'Uniform to Work Day'. Reservists and cadets were asked to attend work or school in uniform. As part of the build up to the annual Armed Forces Day on the 25th, this event served to raise the profile of the forces, to demonstrate our pride in our brave soldiers, sailors and airmen and to encourage interest in the cadets (sea, air, army) and reserve forces. To me the day was about wearing the queens uniform and standing proud for the brave soldiers who are currently out on tour, and also to encourage recruitment to the Cadet Force for people at my school.

With my headteachers permission, I was allowed to wear my Army Cadet Force uniform to school. I attend St Thomas More language college, in Chelsea where I am studying for my GCSEs in 2012 The day was fairly typical and I had classes in history maths and the rest were core subjects. Funnily enough my history lesson was about the civil war, which gave me an opportunity to teach my class and teacher something new, the origins of our regiment, The Life Guards. What was not typical, however, was the attention I received. People often stopped me to ask about it. I was very proud to wear the uniform to school and got a curious but very positive reaction from other pupils as well as my teachers. I hope I have helped, in some way, to encourage people to join as a cadet or help in a way for the soldiers.
